A collection of works by Nigerian-born, New York-based artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby. Published in conjunction with the exhibition “Njideka Akunyili Crosby: Coming Back to See Through, Again,” held at the New York gallery David Zwirner from September to October 2023. This is the artist’s first monograph. It presents works that blend her personal history with an African identity shaped by the diaspora in layered compositions.
“Critics have often (and rightly) marveled at the care and finesse with which Akunyili Crosby assembles vast multiplicities of time and place into singular sites of visual contestation.” —“Frieze magazine
The artist’s work combines various places and times, drawing on both personal and universal aspects of contemporary life, and particularly reflecting the complexities of an African diasporic identity. This volume brings together approximately 50 paintings made between 2010 and 2023. It offers a glimpse into the systematic trajectory of her practice, in which she uses images from her personal collection and Nigerian publications, among other sources, to layer depictions of people, places, and her own experiences within her paintings. Her work projects a range of domestic and interior realms, from lush gardens to motherhood, family, marriage, the body, and personal identity, clearly defining these spaces even as she revisits them through the act of making.
Researcher, curator, and florist Jareh Das, curator Helen Molesworth, curator, art historian, critic, and editor-in-chief of The Brooklyn Rail Jason Rosenfeld, and curator and art historian Drew Thompson contribute essays exploring a variety of themes, including her visual language and material practice, the fusion of Western and Nigerian imagery and forms, and her use of photography in portraiture and figuration.
The first monograph on the internationally celebrated Nigerian American painter who blends her personal history and African diasporic identity in layered compositions

Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s work unites multiple places and temporalities, reflecting both personal and universal dimensions of contemporary life and, in particular, the intricacies of the African diasporic identity. This first monograph on Akunyili Crosby brings together nearly fifty paintings, made from 2010 to 2023, that chart her methodical practice of layering painted representations of people, locales, and aspects of her own experiences with transferred images sourced from her personal collection and Nigerian publications, among other outlets. Akunyili Crosby reveals and revisits distinct realms, from lush gardens to domestic, interior worlds related to motherhood, family, marriage, the body, and personal identity.
New texts from Jareh Das, Helen Molesworth, Jason Rosenfeld, and Drew Thompson focus on a range of themes in Akunyili Crosby’s work, including her visual language and material practice, her mixing of Western and Nigerian imagery and forms, and her use of photography in portraiture and figuration.
