A collection of works by pop art master James Rosenquist, whose career flourished from the late 1950s through the 1960s.
With a background in advertising and billboard production, Rosenquist had a unique perspective on the complex effects that imagery and scale have on the viewing experience. His enormous works envelop the viewer, creating an immersive experience that dominates much of the gallery space. This book traces his process of using materials as the "seeds" of his creations to develop image-filled abstract expressions. Rosenquist often began his work by literally cutting images from print media to create collages, which he then enlarged and reconstructed as massive paintings on canvas or installations.
Covering everything from masterpieces such as "F-111" and "The Swimmer in the Economist" to works that are rarely exhibited, the book explores how he created powerful, mirror-like works that reflect commercial culture by juxtaposing seemingly incongruous images. Through essays on Rosenquist's life, body of work, techniques, and influence on the art world, the book reveals the multifaceted nature of this artist, who believed that "the sum of the parts is essential to understanding the whole."
